major battles
the battles of doiran The Battles of Doiran were three battles (1916, 1917, 1918), all fought by Bulgaria against the United Kingdom, Greece and France (not all of them participated in all battles). Bulgaria won all of them.
Major General Vladimir Vazov was the mind behind the consecutive victories that Bulgaria had, thanks to his well thought-out series of fortifying projects. The Allies’ objective with the Battles of Doirain was to inflict major defeats on the Bulgarian army and effect a great breakthrough in the Balkans in a short time. Although Bulgaria won many battles, the Allies continued to invade it. They even mutinied and threatened Sofia (current capital of Bulgaria). These battles marked when the Bulgarians ended up surrendering to the allies in order to avoid occupation. |
battle of monastir The Battle of Monastir (1917) was a war between France and Bulgaria. The Allies had managed to capture the city of Monastir (in Tunisia). However, they could not impose their power on the city because it it was within the range of the Bulgarian artillery.
The Allied commander-in-chief, Maurice Sarrail, made plans for a large spring offensive and to attack the North of Monastir, killing the Bulgarians. The French were completely destroyed and decided that they would never attack Bulgaria again. The Battle of Monastir was a great boost in Bulagria’s moral. |
